Ryan Restorations is unique because we have specialized in the historic restoration of slate roofing, tile roofing and copper roofing systems since 1999. We also fabricate a wide range of architectural copper ornaments, including finials, dormers, vents, crestings and other decorative roofing elements for historical restoration projects.
We recently put on a New Ludowici French Style Tile Roof for a beautiful home in Evanston, IL. You can see the complete tile roof system, field tile, various trim tile, copper gutters and flashings. The lower porch roof is also hip style with copper flashing where the tiles meet the brick wall. You can see the large, custom copper gutter system along first row of tiles.
Now we rise above to get a better look at the craftsmanship of your local Ludowici tile roofing specialist. There are just so many details that one may overlook so we will introduce them to you. The color of this Ludowici French Style tile roof is Clay Red. Although this roof is one color, there is a range of tones derived from the manufacturing process. It is a desirable feature that imparts character and richness. When we upload the new tile to the roof we artfully blend specific amounts of tiles from a number of different pallets. This process blends the range of tone out as evenly as possible. This is a four main hip roof with four gable style dormers.
Rising directly above allows the copper valleys to pop into view. You can see the trim tiles on the hips, and the ridges stand out a bit. The backyard lower copper roofs stand out. With a close look you will see the gutter around the perimeter of the roof.
Coming into view are the two custom copper air vents by the back dormer o the left side. One is almost in the valley. Extra care and attention was taken to make sure there were no issues. The guttering around back side of the roof is visible. The lower one story bump out also has new copper gutter, including around the glass roof areas. The junction where glass roof and roof tiles meet are mated using custom copper flashings.
The roof has four main hips with four dormers. There is also a 2nd story bump out detail. There is also a one story bump out detail that has two copper flat roofs. The valley is soldered to a lead soaker.
Here we can see so many details include the copper valley flashings on the dormers, tiles cut to straight line in the valley using a diamond bladed saw. There is copper flat roof at the bottom the picture, at a slightly lower elevation. That is in addition to the back, lower bump out copper flat roof can be seen well here. It is made from 18″ x 24″ copper panels with .75″ inter-locking sides. That is attached to the roof using copper cleats and copper roofing nails. Seams are hammered flat with a rubber mallet and the soldered. You can see the solder, outlines to the copper panels.
You can see the two high bump terminals at top of roof where the 4 main hip meet up. The dormer on the left has a valley that drains into the back side of the chimney, which requires extra care and attention to detail to custom fabricate a copper flashing that will last 100yrs. The lower porch roof has four hips on it, three are long and one very short one on far right where it meets the house. We can see the oversize copper gutters well here.
Coming down a little allows us to see the porch gutter using hand-made copper buss bar brackets that support the gutter.
It is a high-back style. You can see the copper flashings at front and sides of the dormer. Look closely at the second image where the dormer left and right rake tile are prominent. Where they meet for the first ridge tile is called a closed ridge end tile.
From above it is difficult to appreciate all the intricate details we have covered.
