Ryan Restorations is unique because we have specialized in the historic restoration of slate roofing, tile roofing and copper roofing systems since 1999. We also fabricate a wide range of architectural copper ornaments, including finials, dormers, vents, crestings and other decorative roofing elements for historical restoration projects.
We recently put on a New Ludowici Flat Slab Style Tile Roof for a beautiful home in Evanston, IL. This is a landmark home with two peaks. Another unique characteristic is on the far right where the driveway goes under a portion of the house. It is where the roof structure is extending from the entrance of a building over an adjacent driveway. It is called a Porte Cochere, a passageway through a building designed to let vehicles pass from the street to an interior courtyard. But in this case, you need to read this entire story to be able to appreciate how it was used during its original history.
Now we rise to see the two peaks, copper valleys, and copper pocket. The top of each side also has a copper ridge. And as we go even higher you will better see the copper ridges as well as the baby dormer in the back (if you look closely). All copper ridges are installed with hidden fasteners. No fasteners are exposed to the weather. Seams of the ridge are soldered together.
Rising directly above provides a nice top view allowing you to appreciate all the details that are impossible to see from the ground.
Now we come down towards the left side to see another copper pocket.
Once we go to the back of house you are then able to see the top of the railing for the balcony, also made of copper. But look closely and now we can begin to introduce a sense of history. Notice the Porte Cochere on the left hand side.
Here is where you now need to look very close in order to appreciate the changing times. Try to visualize someone coming back home in a buggy driven with a horse. The buggy would pull under the Porte Cochere in order to let the homeowners out. And rather than just have the driver jump off the horse, he would be able to step onto the stairs that you see with no door off to the right. Now that is high society back in time.
No we go back to the arrival of Ryan Restorations to install this new roof. Here we share what most people are not able to watch from below.
