River Forest started off with affluent settlers at the turn of the century, which led to grand homes and upscale schools. There is a sizable historic district that stretches irregularly from Harlem on the east to the Des Plaines River on the west. Architectural styles in River Forest include Italianate, Queen Anne, Prairie, Colonial Revival, Tudor and Craftsman styles. Some of the notable historic architects and builders are Martin Braun, Burma Brothers, William Drummand, Tallmadge and Watson, Frank Lloyd Wright and Harold Zook to name a few.
